How Product Ranking Works

Overview

When you browse the product listing pages on AIDIRECTORY, the order products appear in is personalized when possible and fair by default.

Default Ranking: Smart Sort ("For You")

For logged-in users who have set up their profile (selected interests and/or job roles), the default sort is Smart ("For You"). This ranks products based on how relevant they are to your profile.

Here's how the scoring works:

1. Interest matching - Each product category that overlaps with your selected interests adds 3 points to the product's relevance score.
2. Job role matching - Each audience tag on a product that matches one of your job roles adds 2 points.
3. Premium boost - Premium (featured) listings get a +2 bonus.
4. Verified boost - Verified products get a +1 bonus.

Products with higher scores appear first. Products with the same score are shuffled daily so you still discover new tools.

Fallback to Random

If you're not logged in, or your profile doesn't have interests or job roles set, Smart sort automatically falls back to the Daily Shuffle (described below). You don't need to do anything - the system adapts.

Daily Shuffle (Random Sort)

The Random sort shows products in a randomized order that changes every day. This gives every listing a fair chance to be discovered.

Here's how the daily shuffle works:

1. Premium products appear first and are shuffled among themselves.
2. Verified products get 2x weighting - they have double the chance of appearing higher in the shuffle.
3. The shuffle is seeded by date - everyone sees the same randomized order on a given day, and it changes the next day.

User-Controlled Sorting

Users can override the default sort using the sort controls on any listing page. Available sort options are:

• For You - personalized ranking based on your profile (default for logged-in users with profile data).
• Random - daily weighted shuffle (default fallback).
• Latest - sorted by publication date, newest first.
• Popular - sorted by review count, most reviewed first.
• Name A–Z - alphabetical.
• Name Z–A - reverse alphabetical.

When a user selects a custom sort, it replaces the default entirely.

Category and Tag Pages

The same ranking logic applies on category pages (e.g. /categories/ai-writing) and tag pages (e.g. /tags/content-generation). Smart sort and verified-weighting apply everywhere.

Search Results

Search results use a different ranking system depending on how the search is executed:

• Hybrid search (keyword + vector): Results are ranked by relevance - exact name matches first, then semantic similarity, then keyword hits.
• Keyword-only search (when vector search is unavailable or quota is exceeded): Results fall back to publication date ordering.

Summary

Our default ranking is Smart sort for users with profile data - it prioritizes tools matching your interests and job roles while still giving premium and verified products a boost. Users without profile data see a daily shuffle that gives verified products better odds. Users can switch to any sort option (random, latest, popular, or name) at any time. Search results are always ranked by relevance.
