Former TikTok employees launch Superpose, an AI app for photo posing

What happened

Superpose is a new iOS camera app from Melody Chu and Jing Liu, both former TikTok employees. The app lets you take a selfie or a photo of a friend, then it creates four pose ideas using AI (software that learns patterns from lots of examples, like a coach that has watched many photo shoots).

After generating pose ideas, users can save them or use a “match pose” feature to help line themselves up in the camera frame based on the suggestion. TechCrunch reported that some suggested poses can look unusual or “uncanny,” and the company says it is working to improve the styles and make the guidance feel more natural.

The startup says Superpose launched in July and has been downloaded more than 22,000 times. It also says users have generated more than 190,000 poses so far. The app offers five pose generations for free each day, and charges $2.99 for five more, or $9.99 for 20.

Superpose has raised $2.2 million in funding from Khosla Ventures, Meitu, and OVTR Ventures.

Why it matters

A lot of people want better photos but do not know what to do with their hands, shoulders, or face in the moment. Tools like Superpose are part of a growing push to use AI as a personal photo tutor, similar to how some phones already offer tips on framing and composition.
