SimpliSafe launches Video Doorbell Series 2 with live guard monitoring

What happened

SimpliSafe launched the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Series 2 for $199.99. It is a wired doorbell camera, and it is designed to work with SimpliSafe’s home security system.

The main new feature is support for SimpliSafe’s Active Guard Outdoor Protection, which starts at $49.99 per month. With Active Guard turned on, the doorbell uses AI (software that looks for patterns, like a spam filter for video) to spot “suspicious activity.” If the system is triggered, a SimpliSafe monitoring agent can view the live video, talk through the doorbell, and try to scare off an intruder or package thief.

SimpliSafe says the feature is opt-in. It also says the agent can only view live footage when your system is armed and has been triggered.

The new doorbell’s hardware upgrades include 2K video resolution (a sharper picture), a 150-degree head-to-toe view, up to 10x zoom, two-way audio, and a built-in siren. It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi, which can help it connect more reliably on some home networks.

The doorbell uses colored LED lights to show who is watching, blue for the homeowner and amber for a live agent.

Why it matters

For homeowners, this is a shift from “record and review later” to “someone can step in right now.” That could help in situations where a quick warning through a speaker might prevent theft, but it also adds a monthly cost and raises privacy questions about when a person can access your live video.
