OpenAI is rolling out a preview that lets people use the ChatGPT iOS and Android app to control Codex tasks running on their computer.
In short: OpenAI is rolling out a preview that lets you access Codex from the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android and control tasks running on your computer.
OpenAI says people will be able to use the ChatGPT mobile app to access Codex, its desktop tool that can write software code and use apps on your computer.
The idea is simple. Your computer runs the work, and your phone acts like a remote control (like using a TV remote to tell the TV what to do). From your phone, you can review what Codex produces, approve actions before they happen, switch between different AI models, and start new tasks.
OpenAI says your files and account logins stay on the computer where Codex is running. The phone gets live updates, including screenshots, “terminal output” (the text window programmers use to run commands), code changes, and test results.
OpenAI is releasing this as a preview for both iOS and Android. The company says it is available across all ChatGPT plans, including the free plan and its lower-cost Go plan.
This could make it easier to keep work moving when you are away from your desk. For example, you might start a task on your computer, then check progress and approve the next step from your phone while you are in a meeting or commuting. It also shows how AI helpers are moving from chat screens to doing actions inside apps, with people staying in control through approvals.
