OpenAI says its Codex coding tool now works inside the ChatGPT app, letting users check and manage coding tasks from their phones.
In short: OpenAI says Codex, its tool that helps with coding, is now available in the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android.
OpenAI announced that Codex is “going mobile” through the ChatGPT app. Codex is a coding tool inside ChatGPT that can help people write and manage software tasks. The update is in preview, and OpenAI says it is available across all plans on both iPhone and Android.
With the new setup, users can monitor Codex “live environments” from their phone. In simple terms, that means you can look in on a coding workspace that is running on another device, a bit like checking on a download or a long upload from your phone.
OpenAI says people can use their phone to review results, approve commands (giving the tool permission to run certain actions), change which AI model they are using, and start new tasks. The company says it is not just for controlling one task on one computer, but for managing multiple ongoing work threads.
OpenAI has been shipping related updates in recent months. Last month, it gave Codex more ability to run in the background on desktop computers. Earlier this month, it introduced a Chrome extension so Codex can work in live browser sessions.
OpenAI is not alone here. Anthropic released a similar mobile monitoring feature for its Claude Code tool earlier this year.
For people who use these tools at work, this means less time being tied to one computer while a coding task runs. You can check progress and approve next steps while away from your desk, like keeping an eye on a slow-cooking recipe without standing in the kitchen.
