Google Home now lets supported third party AI agents access device data and control smart home devices using MCP. The feature starts with paid US users.
In short: Google is adding a new way for outside AI tools to connect to Google Home and help monitor and control smart home devices.
Google announced a new “Google Home MCP” integration. It lets third party AI agents, including tools like Claude and Open Claw, connect to a person’s Google Home setup.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Think of it like a shared plug shape that lets different AI tools connect to the same system (like using the same type of charger). With MCP, an AI agent can read information from your home, like device status and past events, and it can take certain actions through Google Home.
Google says this can enable features like looking across multiple cameras, checking device history, and building custom control dashboards inside an AI tool’s own interface. An agent could also send you voice messages through Google Home speakers after finishing a task. Google says some safety limits apply, for example it will not allow an agent to unlock doors.
At launch, access is limited to Google Home Premium Advanced users in the US. The plan costs $20 per month or $200 per year. Google says access will roll out in the coming weeks, and setup requires creating a Google Cloud project and configuring it for Home MCP.
This is a shift from only using Google’s own assistant to run your home. It means you may be able to choose an AI tool you already like, and have it understand what is happening in your home using your device history, then help you act on it. It also raises privacy and safety questions, since it gives outside software a deeper connection to devices like cameras, thermostats, and appliances.
