Apple and Meta say a new open-weight AI model called Muse Spark Open is tuned for Mac Studio, and can run on your own computer instead of the cloud.
In short: Apple and Meta say they have worked together on an AI model you can download and run on certain Mac computers.
Apple and Meta announced a new “open-weight” AI model called Muse Spark Open. An AI model is the part of an AI system that learns patterns from data and can then write text, help with code, or answer questions.
The companies said the model is designed to run well on Apple’s Mac Studio desktop computer. Meta described Muse Spark Open as its most capable “open” model so far. “Open-weight” means the core settings of the model are shared so others can download it and run it, a bit like getting the recipe, not just ordering the meal.
Muse Spark Open is aimed at helping with coding and running AI “agents”. An agent is like a digital assistant that can carry out multi-step tasks on its own, instead of only replying to a single question.
This partnership is notable because Apple and Meta have often clashed in the past, including over Apple’s rules for apps on iPhones. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the work happened through collaboration with Apple’s new chief executive, John Ternus.
For everyday users and small businesses, running AI directly on a personal computer can mean faster responses and more privacy, since less data needs to be sent to remote servers (the cloud, meaning someone else’s computers). It also gives developers more freedom to customize how the model behaves, which is harder to do with closed models from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
