Reporting says the US still relies on China for key battery materials and systems, raising concerns for AI data centers and military equipment.

Batteries are becoming a bigger part of two areas the US cares about, large AI data centers and the military. Data centers need large battery systems to keep power steady and prevent outages (like a building-sized backup battery). Military gear also needs batteries for drones, missiles, portable radios, sensors, and other equipment where small size and strong performance matter.
The concern in the reporting is not only finished batteries. It is also the steps before that, including the raw materials and processing. China is widely described as having strong control over key materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite, plus the factories that turn those materials into battery cells, and the companies that assemble larger energy storage systems.
US policy and security analysts warn this creates exposure to shortages, higher prices, or sudden supply problems during political conflict. The reporting also says China has major capacity in the energy storage systems used by utilities and data centers, not just in the ingredients.
OpenAI and other industry voices have reportedly raised the issue with the White House as part of a broader worry about energy supply and costs affecting how quickly the US can build out AI infrastructure.
Watch for new US steps to buy more batteries and battery materials from allies, build more domestic processing and manufacturing, or set rules for what can be used in sensitive defense and data center projects. Also watch whether grid stress and rising electricity demand push data center operators to install even more on-site storage, which could increase pressure on the supply chain.
