AI data centers need huge amounts of electrical work. With too few electricians available, some builds may slow down even when money is ready to spend.
In short: AI data centers need so much electrical work that a shortage of electricians is becoming a key bottleneck.
Companies are building more data centers to support AI, and these facilities run on electricity the way a city does. Without the right power systems, the computers inside cannot run, even if the company has already bought the chips and software.
This is pushing electricians into the spotlight. Data centers need complex electrical setups that must work all the time, including backup generators, UPS systems (big batteries that keep power steady), switchgear (the control panels for high-voltage power), and distribution gear that spreads electricity through the building.
Industry estimates say electrical work can make up about 45% to 70% of total construction costs for a data center. At the same time, labor supply is not keeping up. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has been cited as projecting an annual shortfall of about 81,000 electricians from 2024 to 2034. Reports also mention shortages of plumbers and HVAC technicians (people who install and fix heating and cooling), which data centers need for cooling.
Pay is rising in many markets. Some data center electricians can earn premium wages, especially in areas with lots of construction and in jobs with heavy overtime, sometimes reaching six figures.
Data center work does not end when a building opens. Electricians are also needed for maintenance, repairs, and upgrades because downtime is expensive (like a supermarket losing power and having to throw away food, but on a much larger scale). If the skilled-trades shortage continues, it could slow how fast new AI data centers get built, even when investment money is available.
