Cheap power, lots of land, and a short train ride from Beijing are helping Inner Mongolia attract the data centers that run today’s AI systems.
In short: A city in Inner Mongolia is attracting many of China’s new AI data centers because it has cheap electricity, plenty of space, and is close to Beijing.
Inner Mongolia, a region about two hours west of Beijing by train, is better known for sheep farming and coal mining. But in the last few years, it has also become one of the busiest places in China to build AI data centers.
A data center is basically a huge warehouse full of computers that store data and do heavy computing work. For AI, these facilities are like large power plants for thinking, they run the long, costly training and everyday use of AI systems.
According to Wired, several factors are pulling these projects to Inner Mongolia. Electricity can be cheaper there, land is more available for large buildings, and the region is still close enough to Beijing to connect to major companies and networks. Being near coal and other energy sources also makes it easier to supply the constant power that these buildings need.
More data centers can mean more local jobs and investment, but they also raise questions about energy use and pollution, especially if the power comes from coal. A key thing to watch is whether new facilities in Inner Mongolia shift toward cleaner energy, or whether AI growth increases demand for fossil fuels in the region.
