Thrive Holdings, backed by OpenAI, is buying ADT in a $15.3 billion deal and says it plans to build new AI-based smart home security products.
In short: Thrive Holdings, a firm backed by OpenAI, is buying ADT in a deal valued at $15.3 billion and says it plans to add more AI to home security.
Thrive Holdings has agreed to acquire ADT, a well known home and business security company. The companies said ADT shareholders will get $10 per share, which is about $7.6 billion in equity value. ADT said the total value of the deal, including debt, is $15.3 billion.
Thrive Holdings is a spin-out from Thrive Capital, the investment firm founded by Josh Kushner. Thrive Holdings says it buys and holds companies for the long term. It also says it works with OpenAI as a partner and investor.
OpenAI will provide AI models (software that can recognize patterns and generate responses, like a very advanced autocomplete) and staff to help at Thrive’s companies. The companies did not share specific new products for ADT yet. They said ADT will be the foundation of Thrive Holdings’ “smart home security” business, and that they plan to invest and release new products.
For regular people, this could change what home security systems do and how they behave day to day. In simple terms, more AI could mean cameras and sensors that try to tell the difference between a real problem and normal activity, like a delivery drop-off versus an intruder. It could also bring new questions about privacy, since smarter systems often rely on more data from inside and around your home.
