Deepgram is buying Daily, which maintains the Pipecat open-source framework for real-time voice and video AI. The companies say Pipecat will stay open source.
In short: Deepgram said it is acquiring Daily, the company that makes and maintains Pipecat, a popular open-source toolkit used to build real-time voice and video AI.
Deepgram announced it is buying Daily. Daily is known for Pipecat, a software framework that helps developers connect live voice and video with other AI parts, like turning speech into text and turning text back into speech.
The companies did not share the price of the deal. They said Pipecat will remain open source, meaning the code stays publicly available for anyone to use and inspect, like a shared recipe that people can keep improving.
Pipecat is designed to reduce delay, so conversations feel more natural. Daily also provides hosted infrastructure for voice and video calls, which is the behind-the-scenes service that helps apps handle lots of live calls at once.
Deepgram also said it is launching something called the Real-Time Context Standard (RCS). This is an open protocol, which is a shared set of rules, for voice agents. It aims to pass extra signals and instructions through a system, such as notes about what is happening in the audio, and guidance on how the AI should respond and what it should sound like.
More companies are trying to build voice agents, which are AI systems you can talk to like a customer service rep. Deals like this matter because they can decide whether the tools used to build those systems stay open and flexible, or become locked to one company. Deepgram and Daily are saying they want the core Pipecat tool to stay open for everyone.
