TechCrunch’s Equity podcast discussed why some AI-focused CEO comments feel out of touch, and what that could mean for how AI products are built.
In short: TechCrunch’s Equity podcast discussed a growing pattern where tech CEOs promote AI for personal life tasks, and many people react that the advice feels out of touch.
Comments from well-known tech leaders about using AI in everyday family and dating life are drawing criticism, according to TechCrunch. One recent example is Dazzle AI CEO Marissa Mayer, who reportedly described using an AI tool to help with a school assignment about her daughter.
TechCrunch also pointed to earlier remarks from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about using ChatGPT for parenting help, and from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about AI potentially filling social and romantic needs. On the podcast, the hosts and reporter Amanda Silberling said these kinds of statements can come off as “tone deaf,” meaning they sound disconnected from how most people live.
Silberling argued that the tech industry often sells a future where simple human moments get “optimized out.” In plain terms, that means replacing normal conversations with automated steps, like having software handle things you might normally talk through with another person. She compared it to outsourcing parts of life that are messy but meaningful, like dating and parenting.
This debate may matter more as major AI companies face pressure to prove they can build tools that regular people actually want, not just tools that sound useful in executive conversations about booking flights and dinner reservations. Expect more scrutiny of how AI is marketed, and whether companies focus on everyday problems people truly have, rather than tasks that are just convenient to automate.
