OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said his comments about PC memory were taken out of context and called for more memory production as shortages continue.
In short: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he wants people to have plenty of PC memory, after backlash over earlier remarks during a global RAM shortage.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, responded on X after people criticized his recent comments about PC memory. He even changed his display name to “Ram Altman” and wrote that he wants “the world to have tons of memory” and for people to “put as much as they want in their computers.”
Altman said his earlier words were taken out of context. He said he has been pushing for the world to “ramp up memory production” for a long time and added, “i want you to have so much ram lets build more.”
The debate started after an interview on the Cheeky Pint podcast. In that interview, Altman said it is “quite terrible” for lots of the world’s limited supply of DRAM to sit inside personal computers and be used “five percent of the time.” DRAM is a common type of RAM, which is your computer’s short-term working memory (like a desk where you spread out papers while you work).
RAM shortages have been linked to higher prices for some tech products, and they can make it harder for people to upgrade or buy new computers. The Verge notes that AI data centers have been buying large amounts of the world’s RAM supply, and other companies have warned the shortage could last for years. In that context, Altman’s message is partly about who gets limited parts first, and whether manufacturers can make enough memory for both personal devices and large AI server farms.
