Anthropic is making deals with tech firms and former crypto miners to secure scarce computing capacity, including data centers and electricity.
In short: Anthropic is racing to lock in enough data centers and electricity to keep building and running its AI systems.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, is trying to secure more “AI computing capacity.” That means the physical resources needed to run large AI models, including specialized computer chips, space in data centers (warehouses full of computers), and the electricity to power and cool them.
According to The New York Times, Anthropic has been striking deals with major technology companies, former crypto miners, and other providers to get access to these resources. Former crypto miners can be useful here because they already have buildings and electrical hookups designed to run lots of machines around the clock.
This points to a broader problem in the AI industry. The demand for places to run AI models is rising fast, and the supply is limited. You can think of it like a city suddenly needing far more parking garages and fuel stations than it has today. Even if you can buy more cars, you still need somewhere to park them and enough fuel to keep them moving.
If computing space and electricity stay hard to find, AI companies may face slower rollouts, higher costs, or more competition for long term contracts with data center operators and power providers. It also puts more attention on local infrastructure, like power grids, and on who gets priority when electricity is in high demand.
