OpenAI says it will combine ChatGPT’s Chat and Work tabs into one place, while keeping Codex separate and sharing the same usage limits.
In short: OpenAI says it is combining the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app to make it easier to stay in one place while you go from ideas to finished tasks.
OpenAI is preparing an update to the ChatGPT desktop app that will merge two sections, the Chat tab and the Work tab. The company shared the change in an email to users.
Today, the desktop app can feel like it has too many “rooms.” There is a ChatGPT area and a separate Codex area, and inside ChatGPT there are two tabs. OpenAI says merging Chat and Work is meant to reduce confusion about where a project lives.
OpenAI says the combined experience will first roll out to a small number of users so the company can get feedback. After that, it plans to release it more widely. Codex, OpenAI’s separate coding-focused experience inside the desktop app, will remain separate.
The company also said that after the change, both ChatGPT and Codex will pull from the same allowance pool of tokens. Tokens are the units that measure how much text you can generate and process (like minutes on a phone plan). OpenAI said most users will not notice a difference, but some people may hit limits sooner and have to wait for their usage to reset.
For regular users, this is mainly about simplicity. If you use ChatGPT to brainstorm and then switch into a more “do the work” mode, having it in one place can reduce extra clicking and mistakes, like saving a file in the wrong folder.
