OpenAI will let free ChatGPT users send unlimited text messages

What happened

OpenAI says that starting next week, people using ChatGPT on its Free and Go tiers will get unlimited text chats. Today, those users can hit “rate limits,” which are basically a cap on how many messages you can send in a certain time period (like a store limiting how many items you can buy at once).

The change only applies to text. Messages that include file uploads or images will still have limits, according to OpenAI.

OpenAI is also adding a new “Think” button for Free and Go users next week. The company says the button will let the chatbot use “higher reasoning” for harder questions. In simple terms, it is an option to ask ChatGPT to spend more effort on the answer, similar to telling a person to double check their work before replying.

In addition, OpenAI says it is upgrading the default AI model for Free and Go users this week to GPT-5.6 Luna. For paying Plus and Pro users, OpenAI says it is updating GPT-5.6 Sol to be “more reliable with facts,” especially when answers depend on dates, numbers, sources, rules, or assumptions.

Why it matters

For everyday users, this removes a common frustration, getting blocked from continuing a text conversation after sending too many messages. It also makes the free version of ChatGPT more practical for longer tasks like brainstorming, planning, and writing, while keeping tighter limits on more costly features like images and file handling.
