French AI company Mistral has released Mistral Large 4 in preview, an open-weight model it says can compete with top US and Chinese systems.
In short: French AI company Mistral has released a preview of Mistral Large 4, a freely available model that it says can rival leading systems from the US and China.
Mistral announced a new AI model called Mistral Large 4, also nicknamed “Le Chonk.” The company says it has about one trillion parameters, which are the adjustable settings inside an AI model (like the knobs that shape how it answers questions).
Mistral says the model is “open-weight,” meaning people and businesses can download it, run it on their own computers or servers, and customize it. A preview is available now, and Mistral says a final version will follow by the end of the month.
The company positions Le Chonk as a general purpose model, but says it is especially tuned for coding and cyberdefense. It also highlights use in areas like manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering. Mistral says it trained the model from scratch, rather than using “distillation” (training a smaller model by copying the answers of a bigger model).
This launch comes as governments argue over who should have access to the most capable AI systems. The article notes recent US restrictions and debates tied to worries about cyberattacks. Mistral is making the case that “owning the model” matters, because if you depend on a closed model from a provider, access could change suddenly, like renting a tool that can be taken back without warning.
