In short: Microsoft is now taking preorders for its Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a small desktop computer aimed at people building and testing AI, starting at $5,999 and shipping in November.
Microsoft has opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact PC designed for developers who want to run AI software on their own machine, instead of relying only on online services. The starting price is $5,999, and Microsoft says it will begin shipping in November.
The device uses Nvidia hardware and runs Windows 11 Pro in a setup Microsoft says is tuned for developers. It also comes with common developer tools preinstalled, including Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub tools, Python, Node, and WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux, which lets Windows run Linux-style tools).
Microsoft says the Dev Box is meant for “local AI,” meaning AI models run directly on the computer sitting on your desk. The company says it is optimized to handle very large models, including ones with more than 120 billion parameters (parameters are the adjustable settings inside an AI model, like the many tiny dials that shape how it responds).
For most people, a $5,999 mini PC is not a casual purchase. But it shows where AI work is heading, with more companies trying to make powerful AI development possible on personal hardware. The Verge notes that PC prices have also been rising due to shortages of parts like RAM, which can help explain the high price.
