Microsoft merges Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot into one app

What happened

Microsoft says it is starting to merge its consumer and workplace Copilot assistants into a single app interface. The change begins with the Copilot app and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which many people currently see as two separate icons on their devices.

Both personal accounts and work or school accounts will move into the new app. Microsoft is keeping the name “Microsoft Copilot,” but it will use an updated icon. The practical result is simpler, you should no longer see two Copilot icons in places like the Windows taskbar.

Microsoft says the unified app will combine Copilot chat and image creation with Microsoft 365 features used for work. If you already use the regular Copilot app, Microsoft says your chats and content will move over. If you use the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, you will see small navigation changes, the new icon, and you will get access to Copilot chat.

Rollout timing depends on the device. Microsoft says the web and mobile rollout starts in mid-August, and Windows and Mac updates are planned for mid-September. Some Windows Insider testers are expected to see changes this week.

Why it matters

For everyday users, this is mostly about reducing confusion and clutter. It is like replacing two remote controls for the same TV with one that works for both personal use and work.

Microsoft also said some features will not make the transition. Podcasts and Deep Research will be removed and unavailable after August 18. Group Chat threads, messages, and content also will not carry over after that date. Microsoft says work and personal data will stay separate inside the app, and there are no changes to enterprise security controls.
