Chipmaker Marvell has agreed to buy data center parts firm Lumentum in a $115bn all stock deal focused on AI connectivity.
In short: Marvell said it will buy Lumentum in a $115bn all stock deal to expand its data center networking business for AI.
Marvell, a Silicon Valley chip company, has agreed to buy Lumentum, a maker of data center components, in a deal valued at $115bn. The companies said the purchase will be paid for with shares, not cash. That is what “all stock” means.
The companies said the combined business would be a leader in “AI connectivity.” Connectivity here means the hardware that helps computers in data centers talk to each other quickly. A data center is basically a warehouse full of computers.
Lumentum makes parts used inside these buildings. These parts help move large amounts of data, often using light based signals (like sending information through very fast “light pipes”). This matters because AI systems often need many computers working together at the same time.
AI tools are pushing companies to build bigger and faster data centers. When more computers work together, the connections between them can become a bottleneck (like a traffic jam on a busy highway). Deals like this suggest chip and component makers expect strong demand for the less visible parts that keep AI systems running smoothly, not just the well known AI chips.
