John Deere is testing a new “JD” AI assistant that uses farmers’ own data to answer questions about equipment settings, fuel use, and harvest timing.
In short: John Deere is testing a new “JD” AI chatbot inside its Operations Center for some US customers.
John Deere says it has started an Early Access Program for a new AI assistant called “JD.” An AI assistant is a chatbot that can answer questions in plain language, like a help desk that you can talk to.
The company says the chatbot uses a farmer’s own information to give answers. That includes “field, machine and operational data,” which is data collected from farm equipment and farm work (think of it like logs and readings from your tractor and your fields). John Deere says farmers can ask about things like equipment settings, fuel use, and when to harvest.
John Deere did not say which AI technology is powering the tool. The chatbot is appearing for select US customers in the John Deere Operations Center. The company says it plans to roll it out more widely on the web and mobile, and later on screens inside tractors and other equipment.
John Deere also pointed to its “Farmer Data Commitment,” which includes promises that it will not sell farm data. It also says farmers control whether their data is shared with third parties (outside companies). This comes after years of disputes over the right to repair, including actions involving the US Federal Trade Commission.
Farms already generate a lot of data, but it can be hard to use. A chatbot that answers questions using your own records could save time and help with day-to-day decisions, like adjusting a machine or planning a harvest. At the same time, it puts more attention on data ownership and privacy, since the tool depends on sensitive information about how a farm operates.
