Google says Gemini has over 950 million monthly users

What happened

Google shared the new Gemini number during its earnings call for the second quarter of 2026. The company said Gemini has now passed 950 million monthly users. Monthly users means how many people used the product at least once during a month.

Google also said Gemini users have tripled compared with last year. In February, Google had reported more than 750 million monthly users for the Gemini app.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said people are using newer features such as “Daily Brief” and “Gemini Spark,” which he described as a more personalized assistant. “Agentic” features, in simple terms, are tools that try to do small tasks for you, more like a helpful assistant than a basic question box.

The Gemini app is not only growing on Android phones. TechCrunch reported that it has also built a strong user base on iPhones, helped by new features like an image generator called Nano Banana. AppFigures estimated the Gemini app was downloaded more than 137 million times on iOS in the last 12 months.

Why it matters

This shows that AI assistant apps are becoming mainstream, like email or web browsers. More people are also using these assistants as a substitute for search, which could affect how people find information online. Google is also trying to keep pace with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which Reuters reported hit one billion monthly active users in June.
