Companies shift to teams where people work alongside AI agents

In short: More companies are reorganizing work around mixed teams where people supervise and collaborate with AI agents, not just use AI as a tool.

What's going on

Consulting firms and business leaders are increasingly describing the “unit of work” as a mixed team of humans and AI agents. An AI agent is software that can carry out steps in a task on its own, like a junior coworker that can move fast but still needs supervision.

Instead of adding AI on top of existing jobs, the advice is to redesign workflows around the result the company wants, then decide which parts are best handled by people and which parts are best handled by agents. The idea is that AI is good at repetitive work and spotting patterns in lots of data, while people are better at judgment, creativity, empathy, and taking responsibility when something goes wrong.

This shift is also changing job roles. Some organizations are planning for “agent orchestrators” who set up and monitor agent workflows, “hybrid managers” who lead teams made up of people and agents, and “AI coaches” who help employees use these systems day to day. Leaders are also starting to talk about a “human to agent ratio”, meaning how many human checks and decisions are needed for a process compared with how much the agents can handle.

What to watch

A key question is how companies set clear rules for who makes which decisions, and when the work must be handed back to a person. Expect more focus on monitoring quality, bias (unfair patterns), and compliance, plus training for employees whose job now includes managing non-human coworkers.
