UK start-up CuspAI says it will use AI to design new materials, including ones aimed at removing PFAS “forever chemicals” from water.
In short: UK materials start-up CuspAI raised $450 million and launched a global partner network to speed up the design and testing of new materials.
CuspAI, a UK-based science start-up co-founded in 2024 by AI researcher Max Welling and former Quantinuum executive Chad Edwards, announced a $450 million funding round. The deal values the company at $2.6 billion, according to the company and the Financial Times.
The funding was led by venture capital firms Kleiner Perkins and NEA. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also participated. CuspAI says it will use the money to grow teams across Europe, the US, and Asia-Pacific, including a new office in Singapore.
At the same time, CuspAI launched what it calls an AI Materials Foundry. It is a network of more than 50 partners, including Nvidia, Meta, Samsung, Hyundai, Henkel, Merck, and Tokyo Electron. The goal is to combine data, computer power, lab testing, and industry know-how to develop new materials faster.
Welling told the FT that CuspAI’s system works like a search box for chemistry. A user describes what they want, like a material that can grab certain pollutants, and the system searches existing research and suggests new material designs (like trying many recipe variations without baking every cake).
One early project with Finnish chemicals company Kemira focuses on PFAS, often called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down naturally. Welling said CuspAI narrowed a huge range of possible structures down to about 20 priority candidates, which still need lab tests and certification that can take years.
Many problems, from safer drinking water to cooler computer chips, depend on finding the right materials. If companies can design and test materials faster, it could speed up work on pollution cleanup and energy-related technologies.
