Crusoe confirmed it sold an unfinished data center campus in Wyoming to Google, which plans to invest $17 billion to develop the site.
In short: Crusoe has sold an unfinished data center project in southeastern Wyoming to Google, which will now build it out.
Crusoe, a Denver-based company that develops data centers, confirmed it sold its unfinished Wyoming data center campus to Google. A data center is a large building filled with computers that run online services, similar to a power plant but for internet and AI work.
Google had previously been a target customer for the Wyoming project, but Crusoe did not secure Google as a customer while it was leading development. TechCrunch reports that Google had raised concerns about the project’s cost and construction timeline under Crusoe’s management, and will now take over building the campus.
Google did not say how much it paid Crusoe for the project. Google did say it plans to invest $17 billion to develop the Wyoming data center campus. Crusoe originally announced the site last year with Tallgrass and said it could eventually scale to 10 gigawatts of power capacity, which is a very large amount of electricity.
Crusoe and Google are still working together in another location. Crusoe is developing a separate data center for Google near Amarillo, Texas.
Big AI systems need huge amounts of computing power, and that requires new data centers. This deal is a reminder that building these sites can be slow and expensive, like trying to build a new airport while also securing enough electricity, equipment, and local approval.
