ChatGPT mobile app adds voice controls for Work tab tasks

What happened

OpenAI announced that it is rolling out voice-based “agentic” features to the ChatGPT mobile app. In simple terms, this means you can speak to the app and ask it to carry out a multi-step task for you, more like giving instructions to a helpful assistant than just asking a single question.

The company said users will be able to trigger workflows like drafting documents and summarizing emails. OpenAI is also adding richer text output during voice conversations, and making it easier to switch between typing and talking.

The rollout follows earlier voice updates. In July, OpenAI introduced a new voice conversation model called GPT-Live, and later added it to the desktop app so people could use voice for tasks in the Work tab and for building apps in the Codex tab.

On mobile, OpenAI says Plus and Pro subscribers will be able to use the Work tab on their phones to create documents, draft emails, and summarize Slack messages. These paid users can also do things like build sites and create presentations, and use a “cloud browser” (a browser that runs on OpenAI’s servers, like remote controlling a computer). Free and Go users will be able to use plugins and connected apps.
