Australia courts AI data centers by linking them to renewable power

In short: Australia is drawing interest in AI-focused data centers because it can generate large amounts of low-cost renewable electricity.

What's going on

Australia is a middle-ranked country today for “AI compute”, meaning the total computing power available to run and train AI systems. The Financial Times reports Australia has about 1.4 gigawatts (GW) of data center capacity installed, which is behind major hubs like northern Virginia in the US at about 4.5GW.

Developers are still lining up to build more. Anthropic signed its first deal to take space in an Australian data center, tied to a reported A$30 billion project near Brisbane. In New South Wales, the state government says it is in advanced discussions on proposals seeking 13GW of data center projects, which is more than the state’s current daily electricity demand.

A key reason is energy. Data centers are large buildings filled with computers, like a warehouse packed with powerful servers. They use huge amounts of electricity, and Australia has a lot of land for solar and wind farms, plus relatively low costs for renewable power. One study cited by the FT estimated Australia’s 2050 energy needs would require less than 1 percent of its potential solar or wind capacity.

What to watch

Not all proposals will be built. Data centers can face local opposition, and Australia requires plans for the energy supply before approving new sites. Still, the direction is clear, more projects are being pitched that use renewable power and then “sell” computing power overseas, like exporting electricity in a different form.
