A new group says data centers can cut power use at peak times, helping add up to 100 gigawatts of grid capacity without relying on diesel generators.
In short: Google, Nvidia, Anthropic, and Emerald AI have formed a coalition to help connect more data centers to the power grid by cutting electricity use during peak times.
A startup called Emerald AI, along with Google and Nvidia, has formed a new group called the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA). Anthropic and several large utility companies are also joining, including AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy.
The group wants to make “demand response” a standard part of building and running data centers. Demand response is a long-used idea where big power users agree to temporarily use less electricity when the grid is under stress (like turning down the lights in one room when the rest of the house needs more power).
AEMA says data centers could pause noncritical computing jobs, or shift work to other data centers in areas where there is extra grid capacity. The goal is to help an additional 100 gigawatts of data center power demand connect to the grid.
Emerald AI’s pitch is to reduce reliance on backup diesel generators, which are commonly used today when data centers take part in demand response programs. Its software is designed to connect utilities directly with data centers so they can respond quickly to requests, similar to how batteries can help smooth out power spikes.
Data centers, especially those used for AI, can use huge amounts of electricity. If this kind of coordinated power “flexing” works, it could make it easier and faster to add new data centers without overloading local grids. The companies involved also say it can reduce, but not fully remove, the need to build new power generation.
