xAI-owned dot.com redirects to Grok after OpenAI launches Dots

What happened

OpenAI launched a new product on Tuesday called Dots. OpenAI describes Dots as an always-on AI agent, meaning a helper that stays available in the background, more like a personal assistant than a one-time chat.

Soon after the launch, people online pointed out that the web address dot.com currently sends visitors to a download page for Grok, a chatbot app made by xAI. xAI is Elon Musk’s AI company and a competitor to OpenAI. A domain name is the web address you type into a browser, like a street address for a website.

TechCrunch reported that “dot.com” belongs to xAI, and domain ownership records indicate it was transferred in July. xAI could have bought the domain for ordinary reasons, for example to catch people who mistype similar words (like grabbing a common misspelling of your store’s name). TechCrunch said it reached out to xAI to ask why it owns the domain.

An X user, @birdabo, appears to have been one of the first to highlight the redirect in a post that spread widely. Meanwhile, “dots.com”, which is closer to the product name, is reported to belong to an older company that is no longer active.

Why it matters

This is a small detail, but it shows how much branding can matter in AI products. A simple web address can shape what people find first, especially during a high-profile launch, and it can also fuel online speculation about rival companies.
