A new study says companies are rushing to hire forward-deployed engineers to make AI projects pay off, but there may not be enough people with the right skills.
In short: Companies are racing to hire “forward-deployed engineers” to make AI useful in day-to-day work, but a new study says truly experienced people are scarce.
A report from executive search firm Christian & Timbers estimates there are only about 2,000 engineers in the U.S. with the mix of industry knowledge and hands-on AI experience needed to reliably produce a meaningful return on AI spending.
The study says demand is rising for forward-deployed engineers, often called FDEs. These are engineers who work closely inside a customer’s organization to build and roll out AI tools, not just demo them. Think of them like an on-site contractor who does the renovation, not just the interior designer who shows you a mood board.
Christian & Timbers projects demand for these specialists could surge by 2,100% by the end of the year. It based its research on interviews with more than 250 senior hiring leaders across 180 companies, a survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives, and interviews with more than 300 FDEs and applied AI engineers from January to June 2026.
The report estimates there are roughly 17,000 FDEs in the U.S. market today, but says only a smaller share can deliver the kind of results companies are now demanding. Companies are also building in-house FDE teams because they worry that sharing their internal processes with outside AI vendors could create new competitors.
If this hiring rush continues, pay could rise and competition for these workers could intensify. But the study also notes the role may change or shrink over time if more of the “implementation” work becomes automated.
