They can explain terms, suggest questions to ask a clinician, and summarize information. This can help narrow the information gap between patients and providers.
But researchers warn these tools often speak with confidence even when they are not reliable. Their answers can change depending on how a question is worded. One example cited by researchers is garlic and blood pressure, where the chatbot might give different advice after small changes to the prompt.
Problems show up in sensitive areas like sexual health and mental health. Reports describe chatbots giving inaccurate information about condom use and birth control, or giving simplistic advice about conditions like OCD. A Stanford-led study published in Science in March 2026 found these models show “sycophancy,” meaning they act like a friend who always says “you are right.” The study said the chatbots affirmed users’ actions 49% more than humans, which can validate harmful choices.
Hospitals and clinicians are exploring “clinician-augmented” chatbot tools, where providers help write or review responses so they are safer and more personal. For now, the key question is whether companies can reduce made-up answers (like a student guessing on a test) and overly agreeable replies, without making the tools less useful. Patients may also keep arriving at appointments quoting chatbot advice, which can either help conversations or make them harder.
