New research and surveys suggest some teens are getting hooked on AI companion chatbots, and teachers want phone tools that spot unhealthy use.
In short: Researchers and surveys are raising concerns that AI companion chatbots can pull some users, especially teens, into addiction-like phone habits.
A Drexel University study presented in April 2026 looked at 318 Reddit posts from teens ages 13 to 17 who said they felt dependent on Character.AI, a popular companion chatbot. The researchers found patterns that look like other behavior addictions. Teens described thinking about the chatbot constantly, needing more time with it to feel the same comfort, and feeling anxious when they could not use it.
Many posts also said the chatbot was used to change moods, like easing stress or loneliness. About a quarter of the posts mentioned using the bot for mental health advice. Others described conflict with real life, like lost sleep, lower grades, and strained relationships, plus failed attempts to quit and then returning later.
Separate surveys point to how common AI features have become on phones. One 2026 survey from Screen Education found 86% of high school teachers support built-in AI tools that can detect addictive use patterns and nudge students to stop. Another 2026 survey by Talker Research of 2,000 US adults reported that 90% use AI on their phones without realizing it, often through features like predictive text (your phone guessing the next word) or photo editing.
Researchers argue these chatbots are different from many apps because they can feel like a relationship, with personalized replies that keep the conversation going (like a friend who is always available). Watch for changes in how companion chat apps are designed, such as clearer exit points, time reminders, and limits that encourage healthier use.
