Stripe says it has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a service that helps companies choose and track usage of many AI models in one place.
In short: Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a company that helps businesses pick between many AI models and track what they use.
Stripe, a major payments company, said it has agreed to buy OpenRouter. Reuters reported the announcement did not include the purchase price.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported the deal value as more than $7 billion. Some later reports suggested a figure above $8 billion, but the most consistently reported number tied to direct reporting is over $7 billion.
OpenRouter is sometimes described as an AI “gateway” or “router.” In simple terms, it acts like a traffic director (like a switchboard) that lets developers access hundreds of AI models through one setup, instead of connecting to each model company separately. Reports say OpenRouter offers access to 400 or more models.
OpenRouter already uses Stripe for practical money tasks like invoicing, tax calculation, payments, and fraud controls. With this deal, Stripe would own the layer that helps businesses choose which model to use, measure usage, and then bill for it.
As more companies use AI, their spending can start to look like a utility bill. They want to compare options, switch providers quickly, and manage costs based on how much they use. By combining OpenRouter’s usage tracking and model selection with Stripe’s billing and payments tools, Stripe could play a bigger role in how AI services are priced and paid for across the industry.
