AI hardware startup Etched says it raised $700M led by Jane Street, valuing the company at $21B after testing its AI system.

Etched, a startup that builds computer hardware for running AI, announced it raised another $700 million. The round was led by Jane Street, a trading firm known for using lots of computing power.
Etched says Jane Street tested and bought its first shipped “AI cluster” system, meaning a rack of many connected computer chips working together (like a team of engines instead of one). After that test, Jane Street led the new investment.
The funding follows a fast jump in Etched’s valuation, which is an estimate of what the company is worth based on what investors pay. Etched was valued at $10.3 billion in July, and it is now valued at $21 billion. TechCrunch notes it was valued at $5 billion in December.
Etched says its systems are aimed at making “inference” faster. Inference is the step that happens after you type a prompt into an AI chatbot, and the system figures out the answer (like a cashier totaling your bill after you place an order). The company says it built new parts for two stages of that work, understanding the prompt and then generating the response.
A lot of AI progress depends on having enough fast, affordable hardware to run these systems at scale. If Etched’s approach really lowers costs and boosts speed, it could make AI services cheaper to operate and easier to offer to more people. The speed of this valuation jump also shows how strongly investors are betting on companies that can supply AI computing.
