Anthropic will use space in SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center to get more computing power for its AI tools, including higher limits for Claude Code.
In short: Anthropic has made a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to rent space in a large data center so it can run its AI models with more computing power.
Anthropic said it has struck a deal to access computing power from SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center. A data center is a building filled with powerful computers, like a giant machine room that runs online services.
Colossus 1 houses more than 220,000 advanced Nvidia processors. Processors are the chips that do the heavy lifting, similar to the engine in a car. Anthropic said the deal adds 300 megawatts of capacity, which is a way to measure how much electricity the computers can use.
Anthropic is looking for more providers as it grows and needs more capacity to serve its AI models. The Financial Times reported that Anthropic has raised tens of billions of dollars this year and has also signed major computing deals with companies including Amazon and Google.
Anthropic said this extra capacity will help it serve its models and it will raise usage limits on its Claude Code tool. Claude Code is a product that helps people write and work with software code.
The report also said the agreement includes exploring a future partnership to develop “multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity.” In plain terms, that means they may look at putting some computing power in space, like adding extra computer rooms that orbit the Earth.
AI tools need large amounts of computing power to answer questions, write text, and help with coding. When demand grows, companies often need more “machine room” space fast, or users can hit limits and slowdowns. Deals like this show how competition for computing capacity is becoming a key part of how AI services scale up.
