SpaceX is weighing a major chip factory project called Terafab in Texas, with an initial estimate of $55 billion and a total cost up to $119 billion.
In short: SpaceX is considering building a large computer chip factory in Texas that could cost up to $119 billion.
SpaceX, Elon Musk’s space company, is looking at building a semiconductor factory in Grimes County, Texas, according to a proposal posted on the county website. Semiconductors are the tiny chips that power phones, cars, and AI systems (think of them like the “brains” inside electronics).
The filing says SpaceX may spend about $55 billion at first, and up to $119 billion over time as the project expands in multiple phases. The document describes it as a site that would both make chips and support advanced computing, which is the hardware used to run large AI systems.
Musk has called the project “Terafab.” TechCrunch reports the effort could involve Tesla contributing resources, and that Intel has been brought into the project. The goal is to develop chips for things like AI servers (big computers that run AI), satellites, and future self-driving Tesla vehicles and robots.
Musk also said on X that Grimes County is only one of several possible locations. That means the plan is not final, even if Texas is being seriously considered.
Many companies are struggling to get enough chips, especially for AI, which needs lots of computing power. If SpaceX builds its own chip factory, it could reduce its dependence on outside suppliers. For regular people, this could affect where high-paying manufacturing jobs go, and it could also influence how quickly new AI powered products and services roll out.
