Climate reports show the San Francisco Bay Area, which includes Silicon Valley, has already warmed over the past several decades. The California Energy Commission says the Bay Area’s average annual maximum temperature rose about 1.7°F from 1950 to 2005. State reports also say most of California has warmed by more than 1°F.
Local studies focused on Santa Clara County, the core of Silicon Valley, point to more extreme heat ahead. One climate hazard fact sheet projects that during the hottest events, temperatures could reach about 108 to 112°F by mid-century. Another analysis suggests San Jose, which historically had almost no 100°F days, could see multiple days above 100°F each summer within the next few decades, with peaks possibly around 111°F.
Recent heat advisories and forecasts show what residents are already noticing, more short-term temperature spikes. Some days have run 5 to 20°F above normal, pushing inland areas toward triple digits while coastal areas also heat up. Even winter has seen unusual heat, including a 90°F record in Redwood City.
Hotter days are driving more practical responses, like cooling centers and local climate adaptation plans. The biggest near-term question is how well the region protects people most at risk, including outdoor workers, older adults, and people without reliable air conditioning. There is also growing attention on data centers used for AI, since they need lots of power and cooling, but current reporting focuses more on heat as a risk to these facilities than on data centers directly raising regional temperatures.
