Companies are raising prices or adding surcharges as AI-related demand strains supplies of memory, power chips, and networking parts.
In short: The artificial intelligence boom is straining key electronics parts, and some companies are raising prices or adding surcharges as a result.
Companies building AI data centers are buying huge amounts of computer parts. Data centers are large buildings filled with computers (like warehouses for computing). This demand is now big enough to squeeze supplies for many other products.
The tightest supplies are not only the main AI chips. Reports say shortages are spreading to memory chips, power management chips (small parts that control electricity inside devices), circuit board materials, and optical networking parts (the pieces that move data through fiber cables). Some lead times, which is the wait from ordering a part to receiving it, have stretched to around 40 weeks.
Prices are rising too. Bloomberg reported that some DRAM memory prices jumped sharply over the past year, and Reuters reported a worldwide deficit in certain memory chips, with some prices more than doubling in recent months. When the parts inside a product cost more, device makers often either accept lower profit or raise the price, and more are choosing the second option.
The New York Times reported that one major company recently raised prices on a number of products and pointed to component shortages linked to the AI boom. Other large hardware vendors have also warned customers about delays for certain server parts.
Many forecasts say these shortages could last into 2027 or later, because expanding chip factories takes years. That means higher prices and limited availability could continue for phones, laptops, and other electronics that use the same parts as AI data centers.
