Pentagon adds government versions of ChatGPT and Grok to GenAI.mil

What happened

The U.S. Department of Defense has launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, which are custom versions of the well known AI chatbots. They are available through GenAI.mil, a central portal the Pentagon launched last year.

GenAI.mil already offered Google’s Gemini, and it is built to let employees use commercial “generative AI” tools. Generative AI is the kind of AI that can write and summarize text, like a very fast assistant that responds to questions in a chat window.

The Pentagon says the goal is to make these tools usable for everyday work without sending sensitive government information through normal consumer apps. It also says the official versions avoid some of the data collection that is hard to avoid in regular consumer products.

The department says GenAI.mil has been widely adopted so far. More than 1.7 million unique users have been onboarded out of roughly 3 million civilian and military personnel.

ChatGPT Mil is expected to feel familiar to people who have used ChatGPT, with features like chat, file help, projects, and custom GPTs (custom versions tuned for specific tasks). The Pentagon says it will support routine, unclassified work such as administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy.
