OpenAI executive Brad Lightcap says he is leaving the company

What happened

Brad Lightcap, who most recently led OpenAI’s “special projects” team, told staff he is departing the company. He shared the news in an internal memo that he later posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. He said he will be starting “something new” and expects to stay around for the next few weeks.

Lightcap’s job has shifted several times over the past year and a half. In March 2025, his role as chief operating officer, or COO (a senior leader who helps run a company day to day), expanded to include more of OpenAI’s business operations and partnerships. In January 2026, he stepped back from leading parts of the company’s work with large business customers, while keeping responsibility for commercial work.

In April 2026, Lightcap officially stepped down as COO and moved into the “special projects” role, reporting to CEO Sam Altman. The Verge reports that Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, took over a significant part of his former responsibilities.

Why it matters

OpenAI makes some of the most widely used AI tools, and leadership changes can affect what the company builds and focuses on next. Lightcap’s exit is also part of a wider reshuffle, with other recent executive departures and a push to prioritize key sources of revenue as OpenAI prepares to go public (meaning it may sell shares to the public, like many big companies do).
