OpenAI adds ChatGPT Voice to its ChatGPT desktop app

What happened

OpenAI said it has added ChatGPT Voice to its ChatGPT desktop app. This means you can talk to ChatGPT on your computer instead of typing.

OpenAI says the feature is powered by its newer voice models called ChatGPT-Live. Think of a voice model as the part that helps the app listen and speak in a natural way, like a phone call instead of a robotic recording.

The company says ChatGPT Voice on desktop can work with ChatGPT Work and Codex. It can also use “computer use” skills, which means it can look up information in websites and apps on your behalf, like an assistant who can click around for you. On macOS, OpenAI says “Appshots” can let the app access what is on your screen, including alt-text (the written descriptions that help explain images).

OpenAI previously offered ChatGPT Voice on smartphones, with smoother back and forth conversation and better handling of interruptions. However, OpenAI said that version was not built to take actions on smartphones.

In a demo, OpenAI showed a developer giving one spoken command to do several steps, including creating a new thread, making a pull request (a request to merge code changes), and investigating the cause of a bug.

Why it matters

More people are trying AI tools that act like helpers, not just chat boxes. If voice control works well, it could make it easier to multitask and give longer, more detailed instructions, especially for work that normally takes a lot of clicking and typing.
