Ambarella designs “image-processing” chips, which help devices understand what a camera is seeing. These chips are used in security cameras and in driver assistance and self-driving car systems. Ambarella is also associated with “edge AI,” which means the AI runs directly on a device (like a car or a camera) instead of sending data to faraway servers in the cloud (like doing the work in the room, not mailing it out).

For NXP, the deal would add to its car business. NXP’s automotive chip sales are expected to make up roughly half of its $15.1 billion revenue this year.
