UK AI data center company Nscale appointed former OpenAI and Instacart leader Fidji Simo to its board as it prepares for a possible IPO.
In short: Nscale has appointed former OpenAI executive Fidji Simo to its board as the company prepares for a possible stock market listing.
Nscale, a UK company that builds and runs data centers for AI, has added Fidji Simo to its board. A board is a group that helps oversee a company’s big decisions, like strategy and finances.
Simo previously held a top job at OpenAI, where she was in charge of getting advanced AI systems into real world use. She stepped down from that role in July, citing health reasons, and still advises OpenAI part time.
Before OpenAI, Simo led Instacart as CEO and helped take it public in 2023. She also worked at Meta for more than a decade, including running the main Facebook app. At Nscale, she joins other well known board members, including Sheryl Sandberg, Susan Decker, and Nick Clegg.
The move comes as Nscale is reportedly considering an IPO this fall. An IPO is when a private company starts selling shares to the public on a stock exchange (like opening a store to anyone, not just invited investors). Bloomberg recently reported that Nscale may be trying to raise up to $3.5 billion ahead of that potential IPO.
AI tools need huge amounts of computing power, and data centers are the buildings that provide it (like power plants, but for computer work). Adding someone who has helped run large tech products and managed an IPO could signal that Nscale is getting serious about operating at a bigger, more public-company level.
