Director Neill Blomkamp shared Nightborne, a 13-minute short made with ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0, and said he may try a full-length film in the format.
In short: Neill Blomkamp has released a 13-minute sci-fi short called Nightborne that was generated shot by shot using an AI video tool.
Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9 and Gran Turismo, unveiled a new short film on Monday. It is called Nightborne and runs for about 13 minutes. He said it is a “test start” to show what today’s generative AI can do.
The project comes from Blomkamp’s new company, Barley Studios. The characters’ faces and voices are modeled after human actors, meaning real performers agreed to let their likeness be used. But the visuals for every shot were made with ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0, a “text-to-video” generator, which is software that creates short video clips from written prompts (like typing an instruction and getting a few seconds of footage back).
According to The Verge’s review, Nightborne is built from many very short clips edited together. The article says the editing style, including documentary-like interview segments, helps hide a key limitation: Seedance 2.0 can only produce a few seconds of video at a time. The Verge also points to common AI artifacts like background text that turns into gibberish and speech that sounds slightly unnatural.
Blomkamp said he would like to make a full feature film using this format in the future.
This is another example of well-known filmmakers testing AI video tools as a new way to produce moving images. For regular viewers, it raises practical questions about what “acting” and “filmmaking” mean when a computer is assembling the shots, even if real people are still involved.
