Napster partners with Gems Education to build AI teacher replicas

What happened

Napster, best known for its early-2000s role in music file sharing, is moving into education. The company announced a strategic partnership with Gems Education in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The project will focus on “AI agents” and “digital personas.” An AI agent is a software helper that can take actions for you, like answering questions or guiding a task. A digital persona, in this case, is meant to act like a specific teacher online.

Napster says it will build proof-of-concept demos for Gems, including digitized instructors, game-like learning activities, AI-assisted lesson content, and classroom simulations. One planned feature is a “digital twin” of a teacher, trained on that teacher’s materials such as courses and papers, so students can ask questions outside class at any time (like having extra office hours that never end).

Napster is also setting up a regional hub in Dubai. Samuel Huber will lead the company in the Middle East and Africa. Napster was bought by Infinite Reality in 2025 for $207 million and shut down its music streaming service earlier this year.

Why it matters

Tools that copy a teacher’s knowledge and teaching materials could change how students get help, especially after school hours. It also raises practical questions about privacy and jobs. Huber said student data will stay in-country when required and that Napster does not use user data to train its AI models.
