French AI company Mistral released Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk. It is open-weight, can be customized, and is aimed at coding and security tasks.
In short: French AI company Mistral has released a new AI model, Mistral Large 4, that it says can compete with top closed models while staying open-weight.
Mistral announced Mistral Large 4, a 1 trillion-parameter AI model nicknamed “Le Chonk.” “Parameters” are the model’s internal settings (like the number of knobs it can tune), and more of them often means a model can handle harder tasks.
Mistral says the model is “open-weight,” meaning the company shares the key files that let others run it, study it, and adjust it. That is different from “closed” models from some US labs, where you can use the model through a service but you cannot see or change how it works. Mistral Large 4 is available now in a preview version, and the company says a final version will follow by the end of the month.
The company says Le Chonk is built to be strong at general tasks, but it is especially tuned for coding and cyberdefense, plus work in areas like manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering. Mistral also says it trained the model “from scratch,” rather than using “distillation” (training a smaller model by copying the answers from a bigger one).
For businesses and governments, access to powerful AI has become more political. Recent US restrictions and debates about who should get access to top models have raised worries about relying on a provider that could cut off service. Open-weight models can be like owning the tool instead of renting it, since you can keep running it even if policies or prices change.
