Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees in several countries as it tries to control costs while spending more on AI.
In short: Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees as it tries to lower costs while continuing to spend heavily on AI.
Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India, according to reporting from The Verge. A buyout is when a company offers money or benefits to encourage people to leave by choice.
This is much larger than an earlier offer this year that applied to about 9,000 employees. The broader offer is one of the clearest signs yet that Microsoft expects AI to change how many people it needs.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella previously suggested the company would aim to have fewer employees, but pay more per person and give remaining staff more computing power for AI work. He described this in financial terms, including more “GPU per researcher.” A GPU is a computer chip used to run many AI systems, like having a bigger engine for heavy number-crunching.
The offer also fits a pattern of more frequent job cuts. The Verge notes that Microsoft has been doing layoffs every few months, and it laid off 4,800 employees just months ago, with notable impacts on Xbox and sales teams. Microsoft’s total headcount has also declined year over year for the first time in a decade.
If Microsoft keeps increasing spending on AI infrastructure while trying to reduce employee-related costs, more buyouts and layoffs may follow. It is also worth watching which teams shrink the most, because that can hint at which products and services Microsoft plans to focus on next.
