Adam Mosseri says public anger about AI is rising and will keep growing. He says Instagram is pushing AI accounts to label themselves.
In short: Instagram head Adam Mosseri says frustration and anger about AI is growing and will likely keep getting worse.
Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, said in a recent interview that many people “really don’t like AI,” and that the negativity is not limited to young people or artists. He was asked about a recent pattern of college students booing tech leaders at graduation events.
Mosseri said he expects “more anxiety and more frustration and more anger about AI” over the next couple of years, especially in creative fields. He added that some complaints will be valid and some will not.
He also talked about how Instagram handles posts made with AI. He said Instagram does not rank “AI creators” differently just because they use AI, but he questioned whether the app is as good at judging the quality of AI content. He said there is a lot of great AI content, along with a lot of “AI slop,” meaning low-quality, spammy material that can flood people’s feeds (like junk mail filling your mailbox).
Instagram has started cracking down on AI-generated profiles, and Mosseri said the company is now requiring AI accounts to label themselves. He said this is so people can tell whether what they are seeing is real or not.
Mosseri said it is not practical to ban all AI content, even as problems like misleading AI videos and celebrity “deepfakes” continue. Watch for stricter labeling rules and stronger enforcement as Instagram tries to reduce fake and confusing content while keeping AI-made posts on the platform.
