Meta is pushing faster to use large language models to review posts and ads across Facebook and other apps, replacing some human checks.
In short: Meta is accelerating its shift from human reviewers to AI systems for checking content and ads across its apps.
Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is moving faster to use AI to review what people post and what advertisers run on its platforms.
The Financial Times reports that Meta plans to rely more on large language models. These are AI systems trained on huge amounts of text, and they can read and write in a way that sounds human (like a very fast assistant that has studied millions of documents). Meta wants these systems to take on more of the work that has traditionally been done by human moderators.
Moderation is the process of checking posts, comments, messages, images, and ads for rule breaking content. That can include hate speech, scams, or misleading ads. Using AI can make this process quicker and cheaper, especially given the massive amount of content posted every day.
The key question is how accurate the AI checks will be, and how Meta will handle mistakes. People may see more posts or ads removed by error, or more harmful material slipping through, depending on how the system is set up. Another thing to watch is transparency, including whether Meta explains when AI, not a person, made a decision and how users can appeal it.
